In response to the recent earthquake that struck parts of Mindanao, Brokenshire College Inc.- National Service Training Program (NSTP) students actively participated in an online Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Orientation conducted by the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) on October 11, 2025. The activity was held via Google Meet in compliance with a memorandum from the city and the school administration to conduct sessions online as a safety measure following the earthquake. The orientation included interactive discussions and practical demonstrations highlighting first aid response, evacuation planning, and community-based disaster preparedness strategies.
The orientation served as a proactive step in reinforcing awareness, preparedness, and resilience among the youth—particularly future community leaders and volunteers under the NSTP program.
During the session, resource speaker from the CDRRMO shared crucial insights on earthquake safety, risk assessment, emergency response, evacuation procedures, and community-based disaster management. Students were also introduced to the importance of disaster communication, coordination with local authorities, and the role of citizens in strengthening community resilience.
In his opening remarks, OIC-NSTP Coordinator Renzel M. Suarez emphasized that preparedness began with awareness, highlighting that education and active participation were key factors in saving lives during emergencies. He encouraged students to apply the lessons learned and to promote disaster awareness within their communities. The speaker also underscored the importance of teamwork, vigilance, and proactive engagement, inspiring participants to become advocates of safety and preparedness in their respective areas.
The seminar aimed to empower NSTP students with vital knowledge and practical strategies for disaster awareness, effective response, and resilience-building. Through the expertise and guidance of the Davao City DRRMO, participants gained a deeper appreciation of their role in promoting social responsibility and active citizenship—core values of the NSTP program.
Brokenshire College remained committed to fostering a culture of preparedness and compassion among its students, believing that an informed and equipped community was the cornerstone of disaster resilience.
